WHEN TO MOVE IN
Move in day for first year students is Friday, August 17th!
DIRECTIONS TO JAM
Check out the map below to see where JAM is located!
Our address is 142 Program House Drive Ithaca, NY 14853.
You will take Program House Drive off of Jessup Road -- JAM is at the end of the road/parking lot with a turn around
WHAT TO BRING & NOT BRING
Click this link for a comprehensive list of what to bring and what not to bring!
Pro tip: packing your belongings in boxes or plastic totes to make life easier. Not only will this help the move in, but you can flatten and save the boxes for move-out in May and/or use them as storage under your bed
Rent a microfridge (microwave-minifridge with freezer combo) if you want to share one with your roommate. Remember that if you bring your own minifridge, it needs to use less than 7.3 amps to start and less than 1.4 amps while running so you don't blow circuits and anger the entire hallway. You also cannot have a standalone microwave in your room, but we do have one in each of the unit kitchens.
Another pro tip: if you buy items that come in boxes (like a lamp you need to assemble), save the box. You’ll thank yourself when it’s time to move out.
One more pro tip: are you bringing some kind of plastic storage drawers? Don’t bring them empty – pack them with belongings! Just don’t forget to tape the drawers shut so everything doesn’t fall out on the way…
Tools: If you know you are going to have to assemble something, plan ahead! Bring your own screwdriver, hammer, pliers, etc.
Be sure to review the House Rules for what NOT to bring (feel free to e-mail the RHD if you have specific questions)
If you are bringing a tapestry, jerseys to hang, etc., those items must be fireproofed and you must have proof that has been done. There is a place in Ithaca that will do it for you: Cornell Laundry, 547 W. State St., Ithaca, NY 14853, phone: (607) 272-3561
JAM doesn’t have an elevator, so wear sturdy shoes on move-in day for the staircases!
BIG RED SHIPPING & STORAGE
If you don’t have a lot of space in your car or are flying in, you can have your belongings shipped to you instead! Cornell has its own shipping and storage company – find all the details here.
If you are shipping items to yourself, use the address format below:
CORNELL ID CARD
Your ID card is the only way you can actually enter JAM outside of move-in hours, so it is VERY important! This is also how you enter the dining halls and do laundry, so you really need to remember to keep it on you 24/7!
You receive your ID card at New Student Check-In, held at Barton Hall from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday, August 17th
You can get your ID card before or after you move-in, as long as you do it before 4 p.m.
JAM is at the end of Program House Drive with a circle turnaround. Be sure to print your move-in day parking permit from your online to-do list and put it on your dashboard
Don’t forget that a lot of people are moving in at the same time – once your car is empty, please move it to a spot further away from the unloading area so we can open up a spot for a new arrival to unload. Family can find their students after the car is relocated!
When you arrive, follow signs to the Performance Space (P-Space)! This is our main lounge and venue space. It is on the side of JAM facing Program House Drive and Appel Field. You’ll meet the JAM staff, receive your key, and get some basic instructions.
If you are arriving after 5 p.m., you’ll need to go to RPCC (Robert Purcell Community Center, our service center) to pick up your key. The JAM move-in staff will likely be busy with other duties after 5 p.m., so they may not be able to personally help you move in.
HOUSE RULES & CODE OF CONDUCT
Now that you are a Cornell student living on campus, you are held responsible for the things outlined in the community standards. Take the time to read them – you agreed to abide by them when you signed your housing contract!
Every on-campus resident must fill out their RIC (Room Inventory Condition) form online. You’ll receive the link in your Cornell e-mail, and it’s VERY IMPORTANT that you truly take the time to fill it out correctly. The RAs use your RIC form when you move-out to determine if there are any damages to your room; if you don’t make a note in your RIC about a giant paint tear on the wall or a missing mirror when you move in…we’ll assume you tore the paint and broke the mirror and you’ll have to pay the damages when you move out. There’s no such thing as too many details, and you can ask the staff any questions
Keep in mind that the RICs are not the same thing as maintenance requests. If something is broken in your room, like a dresser drawer that won’t open, you’ll need to submit a maintenance request to have that fixed. The RICs are only looked at by the staff when you move out so we can observe damages. Our maintenance staff will fix things throughout the year, but you just have to follow the right procedure!
DUMP AND RUN
Cornell hosts a MASSIVE charity yard sale on move-in weekend with everything from MacBooks to lamps to gaming systems to clothes. This is a great alternative to spending a lot of money buying new things from stores before you move in, and all the proceeds goes to charity. This is a great roommate bonding event and you can outfit pretty much your entire room just from Dump and Run!
Please recycle all that you can when you move in! There are large dumpsters in the back entrance to Program House Drive, one for trash and one for single-stream recycling that includes cardboard boxes, paper, plastic, aluminum, and more.
Pro tip: get rid of excess packaging at home before you move in. Did you buy a new set of sheets? By opening them at home you can a) wash them so they don’t smell weird, b) get rid of that excess waste at home, and c) save packing space
While there will be an RA (Resident Advisor) assigned to your specific unit, all the RAs are here for all the residents. We’ll have a resident-only meeting in the evening on move-in day to go over some critical information like the RA on-call phone number, keeping JAM safe and secure, what to do if you’re locked out, etc.
EXPLORE THE HALL
